The article highlights work of Professor Robert W. Gordon, who is an expertise in American legal history, evidence, the legal profession, with specific focus to his book "Taming the Past." Topics discussed include Gordon's theory of legal history; the law-society distinction; short- and medium-run stable regularities in social life, like regularities in interpretation; and ways in which Gordon's theory challenge the way basic legal concepts like contract, property, citizenship, work.
