- Abstract
In this article, the authors agree with K. A. Spencer and S. A. MacDougall-Shackleton when they insist that developmental stress hypothesis in birds can be grouped with other hypothesis linking animal signals to developmental stability using fluctuating symmetry (FA) in visual ornaments. However, they point out one distinction wherein visual symmetry depends inherently on anatomical structures. The authors argue that developmental stress hypothesis provides one mechanism leading to a tie between song and cognition and could also tie song to cognition.
