Positive Reappraisal Model of Leisure Stress Coping—A Proposal.

- Abstract
Currently there are two leisure stress-coping models published in the literature: the leisure buffering model and the hierarchical dimensions model of leisure stress coping. But neither of them has explained directly what the mechanism of leisure stress coping is. Based on the findings from leisure stress coping for people with rheumatoid arthritis and the theoretical analysis of other stress-coping models, the positive reappraisal model of leisure stress coping is proposed. The positive reappraisal model of leisure stress coping suggests that leisure buffers against stress through its influence on the reappraisal of stressful situations. That is, leisure provides a context and serves as a means to reappraise the situation under stress positively to reduce the level of stress perceived.
