The middle period of the Ming dynasty witnessed a significant burst of activity in the building of school libraries. In part a reaction to an increased rate of publication, this also reflects the link between Confucian respect for learning and the exercise of government power. While some championed libraries as a means of spreading knowledge more widely, most built them as a means of social control.
