- Authors
Burgos Dávila, César Jesus
- Abstract
The narcocorrido is a popular and controversial musical expression that is currently widespread in Mexico. The prefix narco refers to drug-related issues. The term corrido refers to one of the oldest musical traditions in the history of Mexico. The narcocorrido is linked and adapted to a socio-historical context of conflict. In this context the narcocorrido is maintained and updated continuously. At present, this is a relevant musical genre in a context where the consequences of the so-called war on drugs prevail. The narcocorrido cannot be understood without addressing the historical, social, and cultural context in which it occurs. The aim of this article is to describe how this tradition has changed and how it has been adapted to different social realities of Mexico.
