- Abstract
The article presents information related to the threatened fishes of the world, with special reference to the species stygichthys typhlops, commonly known as the Brazilian blind characidae. This is one of the two species of troglobitic characidae described so far. The major threat to the species comes from the fact that scientists know virtually nothing about it. Even the exact location where this fish was found is unknown. Only one specimen was captured in May 1962 and since then no other specimens have been reported.
