- Abstract
Beneficial bacteria such as Bifidobacterium and short-chain fatty acids-producing bacteria have been reported to improve bowel movements and intestinal environment. Ingestion of a combination of several beneficial bacteria maybe more effective than that of single bacteria. Therefore, we examined the effects of food containing Lactobacillus kunkeei YB38, Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis BB12, and Clostridium butyricum NT on bowel movements. An open-label clinical study was conducted in 66 healthy Japanese subjects (39.7 士 11.7 years old). Participants took 1 g of tested food per day for 4 weeks. The defecation frequency and subjective symptoms on the visual analog scale (VAS) about the sensation of stress and quality of sleep were evaluated at weeks 0, 2, and 4. The outcome of 51 subjects was analyzed. Bowel movements increased significantly at week 4 compared to week 0. When we categorized the subjects into 6 times or 5 times per week of bowel movements at week 0, bowel movements did not increase significantly in the first group, but increased significantly in weeks 2 and 4 compared to week 0 in the last group. The VAS did not improve significantly. These results suggest that the food tested are effective in increasing defecation, especially for people with a mild tendency to constipation.
