- Title
Preoperative MRI in Breast Cancer Grows Contentious.
- Authors
Hede, Karyn
- Abstract
The article focuses on the controversy surrounding the pre-operative use of magnetic resonance image (MRI) in examining patients with early-stage breast cancer. It says that several reports have suggested that the use of MRI increases the rate of mastectomy, extends the time between diagnosis and treatment and may also increase the rate of overdiagnosis as it detects clinically insignificant cancers. Supporters of the pre-operative MRI defend their position by saying that the procedure reduces re-excision surgeries and operative costs.
