- Abstract
The present article deals with the problem of the "crisis of masculinity" in the three early novellas by Hugo von Hofmannsthal: "The Tale of the 672nd Night" (1895), "Rider's Story" (1899), and "Experience of Marshal Bassompierre" (1900). The protagonists of these novellas assume the dominance of masculinity and, at first glance, reproduce sexist discourses. However, the fantasies of masculinity are shattered by the disruption of power relations between the male protagonists and the female characters. The descriptions of voices in the texts represent the invalidity of supposedly superior masculinity and reflect the powerlessness of the male figures in the face of the impenetrable logic of the narrated world.
