Abstract

Introduction: Various plant extracts have contributed novel drug preparations with good safety and efficacy against several pathogens. The present study aimed at determining the antimicrobial potential of methanolic leaf extracts of Barleria cristata leaves against common endodontic pathogens. Methods: The antibacterial activity of the methanol extracts of the leaves of Barleria cristata leaves was investigated against organisms, E.faecalis and P.endodontalis was evaluated by determining and zone of inhibition. Diameters of the zone of inhibition when compared with standard intracanal medicament. All experiments were conducted in triplicate and values were expressed as the mean ± standard deviation. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey tests were performed for statistical justification. Results: The percentage of zone of inhibition on E. faecalis and P.endodontalis with methanolic extracts of Barleria cristata were increasing with increasing concentrations. Also the zone of inhibition was greater for E.faecalis compared to P. endodontalis which means that the extract is more effective against E.faecalis. There was a significant difference in the zone of inhibition of E. faecalis (p value< 0.05). Conclusion: The results of the study provide a scientific basis for the use of the leaf extract of Barleria cristata in the disinfection of the root canal system.
