- Abstract
The article discusses the trends in severe disability among the population aged 65 and over in 12 Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries. The ageing of the population and the greater longevity of individuals can be expected to lead to an increasing number of people at older ages with a severe disability and in need of long-term care. Moreover, the rapid ageing of the population in OECD countries is expected to increase the demand for long-term care services. It has been suggested that a steady improvement is needed in the health and functional status of older people, which would enable them to live independently as long as possible. The need to expand the capacity to respond to the growing need for long-term care in all OECD countries is essential.
