- Abstract
This article discusses the current perspectives and challenges in the postoperative management of perforated peptic ulcer (PPU). While the incidence of peptic ulcer disease has decreased, complications such as bleeding and perforation still occur in 10-20% of cases. The traditional practice of using decompressive nasogastric tubes and delaying oral intake after surgery is aimed at preventing complications, but it may negatively impact recovery. Enhanced recovery protocols have shown promising outcomes in reducing hospital stay, postoperative complications, and mortality, but their implementation is hindered by various factors. The lack of scientific evidence leads to diverse decisions among surgeons, highlighting the need for the development of standardized protocols for PPU patients.
