- Title
An Equal or Ward: How Independent is a Married Woman According to the Rabbinic Law?
- Authors
Morrell, Samuel
- Abstract
The article examines the extent of independence of Jewish married women under Talmudic law. The economic relationship between husband and wife and the responsibility of husbands in the administration of the property of their wives are explored. These issues are explored first from a wife's economic perspective and then in a personal perspective. The study concludes that, there is an absolute limit to a wife's independence, represented by the necessity of a divorce, granted by the husband, in order for the marriage to be dissolved.
