- Authors
Zuidema, Leah A.
- Abstract
The article discusses ways that literacy educators can work to combat prejudice by dispelling linguistic myths. The author says many people often make judgments and assumptions about others based on how they use language as a gage of intelligence, competence, motives and morality. Various techniques to help adolescent learners create informed opinions about language diversity and how to educating them about misinformation is discussed. Some of the prevailing myths concerning linguicism are examined, such as the belief that some dialects don't have grammatical rules, that standard English is better than other varieties and that English is not as good as it used to be and is getting worse.
