Neither supporters nor detractors of the ‘noble savage’ image recognize the real strengths of the poor. These strengths, developed through efforts to cope with disadvantages, may be carefully cultivated to reduce these disadvantages. Implications for the educational system and for work with low-income families are cited and illustrated.
