- Abstract
Urinary tract infection (UTI) has been considered a common health problem that affects millions of people and occurs with a high prevalence in women. The increase in bacterial resistance due to the misuse and abuse of antibiotics is worrisome, which complicates the choice of treatment. The bacteria that cause UTI are usually Gram negative that come from the intestine, such as Escherichia coli which represents 75% to 95%, the rest are caused by Klebsiella sp, Proteus sp and Enterobacter sp, Gram positive cocci such as Staphylococcus saprophyticus and Streptococcus agalactiae. The objective of this research is to identify the most frequently isolated microorganisms in the Latin American population. Also, know patterns of sensitivity and antibiotics used in positive urine cultures causing UTI. A bibliographic review of scientific articles was carried out, based on updated information during the last five years in the Latin American population, in English, Spanish and Portuguese. The main sources of information were PubMed, Elsevier, Scielo, among others. After studying and analyzing each of the articles, it was confirmed that Escherichia coli is the most frequent causal agent in UTIs, with amikacin being the antibiotic with the highest sensitivity in the population analyzed.
