- Abstract
The fear, a normal feeling that helps us to realize the dangers, can turn after some traumatic experiences in specific phobias with lasting effects into adulthood. Fear of dentist, the most common form of anxiety among both children and adults, can cause large imbalances in physical and mental health if it is not properly handled by gradual, repeated patient's exposure in dentist office environment under the careful supervision of pediatric dentist for children and regular dentist for adults. Starting from the assumption that school provides a secure environment for education and training, pediatric dental services should be present and involved in daily school life. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to identify and to clarify dental fear among children aged 6 to 19 years, the attitudes and parental involvement in children's oral hygiene and dental health education. The study was conducted in a high school from Bucharest. The sociological research method was questionnaire survey followed by the qualitative and the quantitative analysis of data. 90 students (30 primary school students, 30 middle school students, 30 high school students) and 90 parents answered the questions. The results confirm study hypothesis according to which: if there is a viable partnership between the school and the dental office then the number of children going to the dentist increases, if parents are involved in children's oral cavity health and hygiene education then decreases dental diseases risk and if the doctor-patient relationship is based on trust and understanding then dental anxiety diminish.
