- Abstract
The importance of high intensity interval training (HIIT) and its influence on VO2max consumption in people has been evidenced. Considering that the current trend in physiotherapy lies in the periodization of therapeutic exercise and its implementation, it is necessary to adhere to training programs that guarantee the physical fitness of the physiotherapy professional. The general objective of the study was to describe how HIIT can affect VO2max in physiotherapy students at the Técnica del Norte University in Ecuador. A quasi-experimental pre- and post-test quantitative design was used; with a sample of 66 subjects divided into EG (31) and CG (35); which were evaluated initially and finally through the Cooper Test, calculating the VO2max; the GE was instructed to perform HIIT scheduled for 8 weeks and the GC maintained their usual activities. Data were analyzed using the T-test for related samples. There was a significant increase (P=<0.01) in distance traveled and VO2max in relation to distance and VO2max in the control group (P=>0.01). It is concluded that HIIT can improve VO2max levels in physiotherapy students, generates benefits in lowering maximum heart rate, however, BMI levels remain the same.
