- Abstract
The article deals with vocabulary acquisition and vocabulary work in German lessons. It emphasizes that a well-developed vocabulary is crucial for effective communication and that systematic and targeted approaches to vocabulary acquisition in German lessons are not yet sufficiently established. The authors propose a framework concept for explicit vocabulary activities based on findings from language acquisition research and linguistic models. This concept has been implemented in a new teaching material called "Deutsch Kindergarten" in Switzerland. The teaching material assumes that students with limited German language skills receive German as a second language (DaZ) instruction. It is emphasized that the teaching material does not have the task of taking over this task. The teaching material takes into account a heterogeneous learning group and shows how the individual learning level can be responded to without losing sight of vocabulary work. It is also pointed out that students with German as their first language require a diverse linguistic offer. The text describes various dimensions of vocabulary and the process of vocabulary acquisition. It emphasizes that differentiation of vocabulary areas is helpful for teaching. The development of vocabulary is also discussed. The teaching material focuses on language education with picture books and offers elaborated teaching modules for systematic and sustainable vocabulary work. Various aids such as vocabulary clouds, vocabulary lists, and vocabulary cards are provided to integrate and deepen vocabulary in lessons. In addition, the consideration of individual learning prerequisites and the multi-step and spiral nature of the teaching material are addressed. The example of the elective module on the fairy tale "Frau Holle" is presented as an example. The authors emphasize the importance of systematic vocabulary work and point out that further research and investigations are necessary to confirm the effectiveness of this method and to improve the linguistic knowledge of teachers.
