- Abstract
BSTRACT The reasons for undertaking work designed to explore the possibilities of developing a system of farming on poor land based on meat production from the Red deer are outlined. A description is given of the joint project commenced in 1970 by the Rowett Research Institute and the Hill Farming Research Organisation. Since the farm was stocked with calves, no meat production has yet commenced, emphasis being placed on building up a breeding herd. Calving hinds at 2 years of age has proved to be possible, ninety-one live calves being born per 100 hinds put to the stag. Calf mortality has been much lower than in the wild. There is reason to believe that farming of the Red deer will prove to be technically feasible.
