- Abstract
The evolution of the presence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in the Spanish written press in the last three decades is studied in this research. The aims are to examine the number of annual news related to ASD published in the Spanish press in 1999, 2009 and 2019; and to analyze the evolution of the content of this news. The search was carried out in El País, El Mundo and La Vanguardia newspapers through MyNews, which is a digital newspaper library. The number of news was counted and a content analysis was carried out to determine the central theme of each article according to nine categories. The results show an evident increase in the presence of autism in the national press in the last three decades (17 news in 1999; 41 in 2009; and 152 in 2019). There is also an evolution in the central theme of the news and an increase in interest in making ASD socially visible. These results draw an a priori scenario conducive to favoring the social inclusion of people with autism. However, media overexposure can also produce the opposite effect to what is desirable if the treatment of ASD is not careful with certain aspects.
