- Abstract
The purpose of this study is to identify the level of knowledge and attitude of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) students towards the disabled (PWD). This is because local cultures that practice prejudice against disability are very difficult to erode if the present generation does not have this understanding towards the lives of disabled people. Common misconception of the normal people about the disabled makes them impelling to show negative attitudes and behaviors towards the disabled. Hence, this study is aimed to see how far the UKM students have knowledge about PWDs and have a positive attitude towards OKU. This quantitative study uses a questionnaire distributed to 260 samples from 12 programs namely Year 3 students at the Faculty of Social and Humanities (FSSK), UKM. The result shows that the level of knowledge among FSSK Year 3 students was above average with mean = 3.00 and attitude (mean = 3.21) towards the PWD with correlation value, r = .460 **. This finding suggests that a high level of knowledge about PWDs can shape a positive attitude towards the disabled. The implication of this study is expected to improve the knowledge and attitude of students towards disabled students who are studying in higher education as a preparation for real-world employment.
