- Abstract
Artificial insemination (AI) in dogs has increased in importance in recent years, as the reproduction and breeding of dogs is a hobby of worldwide distribution; while the cryopreservation of canine semen has become a topic of interest to veterinarians and breeders in order to improve the reproduction of animals of high genetic, commercial or emotional merit; canines separated geographically; bitches with conduct problems or tight vagina; and dogs with difficulties ofcopulation. Various techniques are used for the IA and to evaluate the quality of the fresh and cryopreserved canine semen, in order to predict their fertility. In cryopreservation some factors may affect the fertilizing capacity of semen, such as exposure to low temperatures with the formation of intracellular ice crystals, the generation of sperm damage by heat shock and exposure to solutions with some degree of toxicity. A new generation of cryopreservation protocols based on increasing the speed of freezing, and the use of new, are enabling the optimization of the cryopreservation of semen and AI in dogs.
