The Verb נשֹג in Second Temple Hebrew.

- Abstract
In Hebrew texts from the exilic and post-exilic eras, the verb נשֹג (»to overtake«) exhibits figurative senses expressing attainment, encounter, and recognition / understanding. Although these figurative senses are identified in current dictionaries (e.g., DCH), the nuances of the verb's usage are sufficiently obscure to lead to conflicting translations and understandings of the word in particular passages. It is argued here, in contrast to the interpretation offered by several recent resources and commentaries, that the verb נשֹג most likely indicates attainment of a positive abstract goal in Isa 35:10; 51:11; the act of encountering a negative abstraction in Sir 12:5; and (cognitive) acceptance or understanding in Sir 12:12; 31:22 (= 34:22).
