Confirming Coherence in Joel 3 with Cognitive Grammar.

- Abstract
Abstract: Despite the fact that Joel 3 lacks overt indications that vv. 1-2, 3-4, and 5 form a coherent unit, many commentators detect a progression from the bestowal of the spirit on all flesh (vv. 1-2) to interpretation of terrestrial and heavenly signs (vv. 3-4) to a proper response to these by calling on the name of the Lord for salvation (v. 5). Cognitive Grammar contributes support for that construal by recognizing within v. 5 a pattern of constituents that appears 34 times elsewhere, typically at the apex of a rhetorical unit to posit a consequence or draw an inference from the preceding sentences. Cognitive Grammar's category of »schemas« accounts for this pattern and, in consequence, illuminates the coherence of Joel 3.
