- Abstract
Heterotopic ossification (HTO) is the dystrophic formation of mature lamellar bone outside the confines of normal osseous tissues. It is frequently a complication of traumatic insult, both iatrogenic and non-iatrogenic, in addition to neurological compromise. Predisposing risk factors for HTO formation include male gender, diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis, ankylosing spondylitis, immobileization, mechanical ventilation, and inflammation. Typically, such pathological osseous development occurs over several months before it becomes radiologically detectable. In this article, we present a case of accelerated formation of significant heterotopic ossifications just one month following a major motor vehicle accident in the setting of necrotizing pancreatitis followed by a brief review of the multifactorial nature of such rapid progression of disease.
