- Abstract
Chagas disease, discovered by Carlos Chagas 100 years ago, is defined by the World Health Organization as one of the most important infectious diseases of poverty. The social determinants of Chagas disease, such as poor housing and working conditions, low salaries, and malnutrition, are directly linked to the disease in Latin America. The article discusses the current state of research and innovation related to the control and care of Chagas disease, as well as the challenges for the next decade. It emphasizes the need for permanent surveillance, effective treatment, and continuous circulation of T. cruzi isolates. The success of vector control policies in some countries has reduced the morbidity and transmission of the disease, but sustainability depends on control of triatomines and blood bank control. The article also explores the possibility of a vaccine for Chagas disease and the need for new drugs and diagnostic methods. It highlights the importance of holistic care for patients and the establishment of risk stratification models. The article concludes by calling for sustainable and integrated surveillance strategies, improved access to care, and collaboration between researchers, physicians, patients, and policymakers.
