- Title
EL RAYO Y EL ÁGUILA: VERDADES Y ABSTRACCIONES EN UN SONETO DE GÓNGORA.
- Authors
ROSES, Joaquín
- Abstract
The death of the Duke of Medina Sidonia's son, caused by lightning in 1619, was memorialized in multiple poetic versions of the event, both serious and burlesque. One of the two sonnets Góngora dedicated to the subject --'Ave real de plumas tan desnuda"- establishes an elaborate series of oppositions around the poles "truth"/ "fiction," constructing its meaning through the poem's multiple metaphoric references to lightning and the eagle, primarily relating these to pagan and christian imagery. A thorough analysis of these references makes possible a dismantling of the conceptual framework of the poem in order to appreciate the dynamism and plurisignification of the process of reading promoted by Góngora in this and other texts, while at the same time reassessing the importance of a sonnet that a majority of critics have failed to comment upon.
