- Abstract
The curricular internship is a formative step of great impact in the personal and professional development for allowing the student a direct contact with the world of work. This research explored the role of the curricular internship in the transition to the job market. For this, two studies with a qualitative design were conducted. Study 1 explored how the curricular internship is experienced by psychology students, using semi-structured interviews with three students who were performing or who had already undergone the curricular internship. Study 2 described how the internship prepares the newly graduated psychologists for the job market, using questionnaires to 30 individuals working in the field of psychology. Data were analyzed using thematic content analysis and descriptive statistics. Overall, results show that the distinct phases of the curricular internship entail different responsibilities and levels of autonomy and confidence and that the knowledge and skills developed during this process are experienced to promote personal and professional development and facilitate the transition to the job market. Guidelines that enhance the curricular internship in psychology are pointed out. The curricular internship is a deep learning experience for both interns and future workers.
