- Authors
Friedmann, Jonathan L.
- Abstract
The article discusses the life and career of San Francisco, California-based Jewish theater scholar Jerome Haas Bayer. The author opens with a discussion on the development of a unique Jewish identity among U.S. Jews, focusing on the work of the Intercollegiate Menorah Society, a Jewish student organization formed at Harvard University. The presence of Jewish music in California in general is examined, as is Bayer's criticism of the use of church-style music in synagogues. Bayer's essay "The Future of Jewish Music," published in the April 1919 issue of the "Menorah Journal," is analyzed.
