Most of the snow had fallen on 10 and 11 December, when heavy showers moved in off the Bristol Channel to affect adjacent parts of southwest England. Snow depths were variable across the moor, but in places exceeded 15cm. The rime ice accumulated during a period of freezing hill fog on 12 December, and again under a ridge of high pressure overnight on 14 – 15 December.
