- Abstract
In this paper, we present a study on the preparation of nanostructured Fe 3 O 4 (magnetite) samples via co-precipitation, which differs from the typical co-precipitation method used for other crystalline materials. In our case, crystalline magnetite is already present in the co-precipitated precursor. Additionally, we systematically studied the structural transition from magnetite to hematite through X-ray measurements. Our results reveal that the temperature of the onset of the phase transition and the range of phase coexistence depend on the concentration of the chelating agent sucrose and the thermal treatment environment. Differential scanning calorimetry measurements were conducted on the sample without sucrose, confirming the magnetite/hematite phase transition, a possible coalescence effect, and the maghemite/hematite phase transition. Finally, magnetization measurements were employed to observe the effects of size reduction, including the decrease in saturation magnetization compared to the bulk sample, as well as the reduction in magnetization resulting from the phase transition from magnetite (ferrimagnetic) to hematite (antiferromagnetic).
