- Authors
PROBES, CHRISTINE MCCALL
- Abstract
The article discusses sermons of French preacher Jean-Baptiste Massillon delivered to Louis XIV and the court in which the disenchantment of the world and the state of France in her declining glory have a place. It notes preacher's funeral oration for Louis XIV for strategies employed both to instruct and touch his listeners and the court. It further reports that Massillon's originality or distinctiveness lay in the effect of his oratory produced on the king, conviction rather than contentment.
