- Abstract
We propose a reflection about the importance of an historical reading of the manuscripts, translations and commentaries of the Books of Kings (I-II Samuel - I-II Kings) in the West, between the 12th and the 14th centuries. Starting with the main liturgical and pedagogical uses of the four books of Kings, the genealogy of the textual corpus and its ordination in the manuscripts, we can identify four strategic tendencies: the search for a narrative continuity, the prophetic function of Israel's royalty, the renunciation from the idea of the Temple and, finally, the theory of the kingdom on earth. We thus observe a demystification and loss of the performative effect of the Books of Kings.
