The authors discuss discretionary fortification of foods and beverages where vitamins and minerals are added at the discretion of manufacturers for marketing purposes. Topics discussed include marketing strategies that play up a product's connection to endurance when it comes to novel beverages, prevalence of experience marketing where focus is placed on ways that consumers are interested in using goods and lack of health benefit associated with discretionary fortification of novel beverages.
