The article comments on the state of kidney transplantation. One essential observation in clinical renal transplantation has been the beneficial effects of prior blood transfusion. Anti-lymphocytic globulin preparations are based on immunological concepts. With this exception, however, the rest of effective immunosuppression has depended on three drugs, a blend of azathioprine and steroids and then on cyclosporin A.
