- Abstract
Examines the role of desferrioxamine (DFO) in the treatment of dialysis encephalopathy. Important features of dialysis encephalopathy which is a neurological syndrome occurring almost exclusively among patients undergoing treatment for end-stage renal failure. Ability of DFO to eliminate a large proportion of iron via the fecal route; Indication that random serum aluminum determinations are unreliable predictors of dialysis encephalopathy; Capability of DFO in reducing the body burden of aluminum considerably.
