A literary criticism of the book "The Degenerating Aesthetics of Frank Norris's Vandover and the Brute" by Frank Norris is presented. Topics include heels of Charles Darwin's revelations about species evolution; theory of degeneration in particular became popular as an explanation for any perceived negative traits in humanity; and popularized theories about criminals and other undesirable members of society rely on phrenology and physiognomy.
