- Abstract
An essay is presented that discusses Jewish responses in the tannaitic halakhah to the Roman subjugation of cities in Palestine after the destruction of the Jerusalem Temple. Topics include the notion of a pomerium as a boundary of a Roman city or town, the rebuilding of Jerusalem as Aelia Capitolina, and the role of the biblical figure Joshua son of Nun in rabbinic responses to the Roman rebuilding efforts. The significance of walled cities in relation to the celebration of Purim is noted.
