- Title
Science and Religion: A Historical Perspective on the Conflict over Teaching Evolution in the Schools.
- Authors
Le Beau, Bryan F.
- Abstract
The article traces the history of political and legal challenges to teaching evolution in U.S. public schools. In 2005, court cases in Kansas and Pennsylvania concerning the teaching intelligent design (ID) as an alternative to evolution drew the attention of people across the political and religious spectrum. The author emphasizes the need to discuss and conclusively discredit creationism and ID not just in the minds of scientists but among the American public. His discussion reminds people that science and religion were not always opposed.
