- Abstract
The article discusses the prize book awarded to American Author Herman Melville in 1831 from his school, Albany Academy, entitled "The London Carcanet: Containing Select Passages from the Most Distinguished Writers." The 1831 anthology was inscribed "To Herman Melville The first nest in his class in --." A newspaper announcement fills in the erased words as "ciphering books." The purposefull erasure of the inscription, as well as the erasure of lines within the book from usage, are explored.
