- Abstract
Background: Tinea capitis is an infection of the hairs of the scalp caused by species of Trichophyton and Microsporum. Dermoscopic pattern of "comma hairs" has been proposed as a diagnostic method of tinea capitis. Objective: To describe the "comma hairs" pattern in three pediatric patients with tinea capitis. Patients and method: We conducted a descriptive study of three patients who had clinical diagnosis of tinea capitis. To each one of them we performed a dermoscopic study with Dermlite PRO HR; we took pictures with a Canon SD 750 camera, and described the observed characteristics. Results: In all cases we identified "comma hairs". Also microscopic study conformed with direct examination (KOH) and cultures were positive. Conclusion: Dermoscopic identification of "comma hairs" could allow us to diagnose tinea capitis in active stage, especially in those cases where the clinical appearance could not be so characteristic.
