- Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to describe the history of school nurses and the critical role their education and skills play in children's health. School nurses are vital to the health of school-age children by serving as educators, counselors, mediators, and providers of physical and mental health assessments/resources/referrals. School nurses support teachers and increase student learning by decreasing absenteeism and maintaining health. Children who attain a good education will be able to generate more income in society for future growth. School-age children have an increase in complex health conditions warranting the need for a nurse all day every day. Nurses need citizen support to provide a nurse in every school by speaking up to legislators and advocating for an increase in school nurse funding.
