- Abstract
The article discusses the significance of Edict of Villers-Cotterêts in the work of Michel de Montaigne and Jacques Derrida. It says that Derrida mentions the edict on several occasions to analyze the historical context of the law. It states that Montaigne makes reference to it once and assumes the familiarity of the readers to the law. It adds that the historico-phisophical critiques of language, law, and social institutions build a friendship between these major philosophers.
