Tétart, Philippe
- Abstract
The article focuses on sports coverage in the French newspaper "Le Figaro" between 1854 and 1866. The businessman Hyppolite de Villemessant purchased "Le Figaro" in 1854 and is credited with making it a daily publication and beginning sports coverage. Sports that were covered tended to be those that were said to appeal to a more upper middle-class readership. “Le Figaro” covered sports such as horse racing, fencing, jeu de paume (court tennis), and swimming.
