- Title
Mega Troubles for Microfinance.
- Authors
CRAXTON, MELANIE; RATHKE, WADE
- Abstract
The article discusses problems associated with microfinance in developing countries. The author examines microfinancial institutions (MFI) such as the Grameen Bank of Bangladesh, established by Mohammad Yunus, as well as MFIs which are listed as public companies such as Compartamos and SKS. The author argues that many MFIs charge high nominal interest rates and have not been shown to reduce poverty or to be sustainable. Graphs are presented which show interest rates charged in areas including South Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America.
