- Authors
Sweatman, Mary; Warner, Alan
- Abstract
Young children can benefit tremendously from spending time in nature. Research identifies developmental benefits, active living benefits, and the benefits of caring about the natural world; as well as the immediate benefits of exploration and play. This article provides the rationale, and resources for engaging nature-based activities for early-childhood education. Preparation guidelines and follow-up activities that reinforce the outdoor sensory experiences are also outlined. With deliberate preparation, plus a dose of enthusiasm and positive role modeling, educators can make nature experiences simple, enjoyable, creative and engaging.
