- Abstract
During the last decades of the XIXth century, philosophers, physicians and naturalists in Mexico engaged in lively debate over Darwin's ideas about evolution of the species. Justo Sierra, the illustrious Mexican lawmaker and politician who decisively influenced education in the era, had brought Darwin's ideas to public attention for the first time in 1875, sparking off a debate which took place in scientific societies and in the press alike. In this paper I will talk about the Darwinian ideas of the main medical doctors and naturalists Alfredo Dugès, Jose Ramirez and Alfonso L. Herrera.
