- Abstract
The article presents a historical view on the language and ethnicity in Matabeleland or Southern Zimbabwe during 1930-1960. The Ndebele and Kalanga people inhabit a largely neglected, dry, but politically assertive region of Matabeleland. Though today, both Ndebele and Kalanga have developed a joint political community, this development, which has a long history, is often mistaken for a joint ethnicity. By concentrating their attention on elite interactions in the construction of ethnicity, the scholars of constructivism ignore the role of African commoners in the social construction of ethnicity in the colonial era.
