- Abstract
In contrast to periodontally compromised teeth, the treatment of peri-implant defects is a new area for many dentists. Therefore, instruments used for periodontal therapy are often also used to decontaminate implant surfaces. Our series of in-vitro studies examined manual and mechanical implant surface decontamination in three differently angled defect configurations (30°, 60°, 90°) using a curette, a sonic-scaler and an air-polishing device in both non-surgical and surgical approaches. It was shown that the use of an air-polishing device with glycine powder is the most effective (air-polishing device > sonic scaler > curette) and least surface-damaging decontamination method, regardless of the approach and defect configuration.
